A full masonry fireplace is brick or stone laid on site — a masonry firebox, smoke chamber, masonry flue and chimney crown working as one structural system. Texas heat cycles and Gulf Coast rain both find the weak point: open mortar joints, a spalling brick firebox, cracked flue tiles or a failed crown. We inspect the whole system, tell you what is sound and what is not, and put the scope in writing before any work starts.

Spalled firebrick and failed joints in the masonry firebox are cut out and relaid with refractory mortar, restoring a sound firebox that holds heat the way it was built to.

Tuckpointing & masonry repair
Deteriorated mortar is ground out and repacked for tight mortar joints on the firebox, chimney stack and hearth. Stops water intrusion before it becomes a structural problem.

Smoke chamber parging
Corbelled or eroded smoke chambers are parged smooth with refractory material for a safe, proper draft into the masonry flue.

Cracked or missing clay flue tiles are addressed with a relining system sized to the fireplace, restoring a proper masonry flue that is verified by camera.

What is the difference between a masonry fireplace and a prefab fireplace?
A masonry fireplace is built on site from brick or stone — a brick firebox, smoke chamber and masonry flue on a footing. A prefab (factory-built) fireplace is a metal firebox with refractory panels inside a framed chase. Solid brick inside the firebox and a brick or stone chimney outside usually means masonry. Our inspection confirms it.
Can a crumbling brick firebox be rebuilt instead of replaced?
Often, yes. A structurally sound masonry firebox with failed firebrick or mortar joints can be repointed or rebuilt with refractory mortar. When the structure itself has failed, we explain the rebuild options and put the scope in writing.
What is tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing removes deteriorated mortar from the joints and packs in fresh mortar, restoring tight mortar joints that keep water out and hold the structure together. It is one of the most common masonry chimney repairs on the Gulf Coast and in DFW.
Does a masonry chimney need relining?
If clay flue tiles are cracked, missing or gapped, the flue can no longer contain heat and gases safely. Relining restores a proper masonry flue with a safe draft. A camera inspection is how we verify whether yours needs it.
How much does masonry fireplace repair cost?
It depends on what has failed. A masonry chimney sweep and inspection is $229. Tuckpointing, crown repair, smoke chamber parging, relining and firebox rebuilds are quoted in writing after the inspection, based on what the technician verifies.
What is a smoke chamber and why does it matter?
The smoke chamber is the sloped masonry area above the firebox that funnels smoke into the flue. Rough, stepped or eroded masonry there causes poor draft and creosote buildup. Parging the smoke chamber smooths it and restores a safe draft.
Why is my chimney crown cracked, and does it matter?
The crown is the masonry cap at the top of the chimney. Cracks let water into the brick, where it expands, breaks mortar joints and eventually reaches the firebox. Crown repair or rebuild stops the water at the top before the damage works its way down.
