How to Clean a Dryer Vent Yourself (and When to Call a Pro)

Clean a dryer vent yourself in about an hour: unplug, pull the hose, brush the duct, clear the hood. Here is when Baldwin County homes need a pro instead.

You can clean a dryer vent yourself in about an hour with a rotary brush kit, a shop vacuum and a screwdriver. Unplug the dryer, pull off the transition hose, vacuum the dryer outlet, brush the wall duct from inside, then clear the outside hood. If the duct runs over 10 or 15 feet, up to the roof, or has crushed sections, call a pro.

Quick answer:

  • Clean the lint screen every load. Clean the whole vent at least once a year (NFPA).
  • DIY works for short, straight runs out a side wall.
  • Roof exits, long runs, many elbows and second-floor laundry rooms are pro jobs.
  • Swap plastic or foil hoses for metal.

Holiday guests are coming. That means extra sheets, extra towels, and the grandkids changing clothes three times a day. Your dryer is about to work overtime. If it is already taking two cycles to dry a load of towels, it is not being lazy. It is trying to tell you something. Unlike your teenager, it is worth listening to.

How do you clean a dryer vent yourself?

Brush it out from the inside, vacuum what you pull loose, and clear the outside hood. Here is the order that works, and keeps lint out of your laundry room carpet and off the dog.

  1. Unplug and pull the dryer out. Unplug the dryer. If it is gas, turn the gas valve off first and do not bend the gas line. Slide the dryer out slowly so you can reach the back.
  2. Disconnect the transition hose. Loosen the clamps and pull the short hose off the dryer and the wall. Shake it out over a trash bag. If it is plastic or thin foil, plan to replace it with metal.
  3. Vacuum the dryer outlet and lint trap slot. Pull the lint screen and vacuum the slot with a long crevice tool. Vacuum the round exhaust port on the back of the dryer as far as you can reach.
  4. Brush the wall duct. Feed a rotary dryer vent brush kit into the wall opening on a cordless drill set to low and clockwise. Add rods a section at a time. Pull back often and vacuum the lint you drag out.
  5. Clean the outside hood. Go outside, pop off any guard, and pull lint, nests and debris out of the hood. Make sure the flap swings freely. Never put a screen on a dryer vent hood; lint clogs it fast.
  6. Reconnect, run and check. Reattach the hose with clamps, keep it short and straight, and push the dryer back without crushing it. Run the dryer on air fluff and confirm strong airflow and an open flap outside.

Tools: rotary dryer vent brush kit, cordless drill, shop vacuum with crevice tool, screwdriver or nut driver, new foil tape or clamps, and a trash bag. A headlamp helps. So does a snack.

Hack: before you start, tape the rod joints with a wrap of painter's tape. Rods that come apart inside a wall are the number one way a 1-hour DIY job turns into a phone call.

How often should you clean a dryer vent?

Clean the lint screen before or after every load, and clean the whole vent once a year, or sooner if drying takes longer than normal. That is straight from the NFPA dryer safety tips. A CPSC staff report on dryer fires notes that manufacturer intervals for cleaning the vent run from 1 to 3 years, and that a blocked vent gives almost no warning except damp clothes.

In Baldwin County we lean toward the shorter end. Gulf humidity makes lint damp, so it sticks to duct walls instead of blowing out. Big families, pets that shed, and long duct runs all speed it up.

DIY vs. pro dryer vent cleaning: which one fits your house?

DIY fits a short run out a side wall. A pro fits anything long, high, crushed, or hidden. Use this table to decide.

Your setupDIY dryer vent cleaningCall a pro
Short, straight run (under about 10 feet) out a side wallYes, with a brush kitOptional
Long run with two or more elbowsRisky, rods can get stuckYes
Vent exits through the roofNo, ladder and roof workYes
Second-floor laundry roomPartly, inside onlyYes
Bird nest or animal in the hoodSmall debris onlyYes if it is packed deep
Crushed, disconnected or plastic duct in the wallNoYes

What are the signs your dryer vent needs cleaning?

The biggest sign is towels that need a second cycle. Others to watch for:

  • The top of the dryer feels hot to the touch.
  • The laundry room turns warm and muggy on a dry day.
  • A burning or musty smell when the dryer runs.
  • The outside flap barely lifts, or lint is caked on the hood.
  • The dryer shuts off early on a heat sensor.

For more on that two-cycle warning, see our post on why towels taking two cycles is a dryer vent warning. If the flap is the problem, read dryer vent flap won't open.

Where does DIY dryer vent cleaning stop?

Stop if the brush hits a hard block it will not pass, if a rod comes apart inside the wall, if you find crushed or disconnected duct, or if the vent goes to the roof. Also stop if you smell gas behind a gas dryer. Close the valve, leave the area, and call your gas company. Pushing harder at any of these points usually makes the clog worse or tears the duct.

What our techs see

On Gulf Coast jobs, the clog is usually not in the middle of the duct. It is at the ends. Lint packs where the transition hose sags behind the dryer and at the outside hood, where damp air meets cooler air and lint mats into a felt pad. Bird nests in hoods are common here in spring. Painted-shut flaps and screened hoods show up a lot too. That is why we always clean both ends, not just the run.

The payoff is real. A clear vent means a dry load in one cycle, a cooler laundry room, and fresh towels ready when the in-laws arrive. Grandma will notice the fluffy towels. She will not notice the vent, and that is the point.

FAQ

How often should I clean my dryer vent in Baldwin County?

Clean the lint screen every load and the full dryer vent at least once a year. NFPA says to clean it sooner if clothes start taking longer to dry. In Baldwin County, humid air makes lint damp and sticky, so busy households, long duct runs and roof exits often need a cleaning every 6 to 12 months.

Can I clean a dryer vent with a leaf blower?

Not by itself. A leaf blower can push loose lint out a short, straight duct, but it can also pack lint tighter at a bend or blow it into a wall cavity. Use a rotary brush kit first, then blow air through. If the duct is long or runs to the roof, call a pro.

How do I know my dryer vent is clogged?

Common signs are clothes needing two cycles, a dryer that feels hot on the outside, a laundry room that gets warm and muggy, a burning smell, or an outside flap that barely moves when the dryer runs. CPSC testing found a blocked vent gives almost no warning except poor drying.

How much does dryer vent cleaning cost in Baldwin County?

1st Choice Residential cleans dryer vents in Baldwin County and Mobile for $199. That covers brushing the full duct from the dryer to the outside exit, clearing the hood and flap, and checking the transition hose. Call (251) 272-1990 or book online.

Is a foil or plastic dryer hose safe?

No. Plastic and thin foil accordion hoses crush easily, trap lint in their ridges, and can burn. CPSC staff recommend rigid metal duct for the transition from dryer to wall. NFPA says use rigid or flexible metal venting to keep air moving and drying times normal.
