Gas Fireplace Pilot Light Won't Stay Lit? Here's What's Actually Failing

Your gas fireplace pilot lights, then dies seconds later. Here's what's actually failing - thermocouple, thermopile, pilot orifice - and what's safe to check yourself.

You hold the pilot knob down. The little flame catches. You count to thirty, let go - and it dies. You try again. Same thing. Maybe five more times, same thing.

That specific symptom narrows the problem down to a short list of parts, and it is almost never the whole fireplace. A pilot that lights and then drops out is a different failure than a fireplace that clicks and never lights at all. Here is what is actually happening inside that firebox, what you can safely check yourself, and where the line is.

Why the Pilot Dying Is Actually a Safety Feature

Your pilot flame is not just there to light the burner. It is heating a small sensor that proves to the gas valve that a flame exists. No heat on that sensor, no gas. That is the whole design, and it is the reason a gas fireplace does not quietly fill your living room with unburned gas when something goes wrong.

There are two sensors people mix up:

  • The thermocouple is a single metal probe sitting in the pilot flame. Heat it and it generates a tiny electrical signal - measured in millivolts - that holds the pilot safety valve open. When it weakens, the valve closes and the pilot goes out the second you release the knob.
  • The thermopile (also called a generator) is a bundle of thermocouples. It puts out far more voltage, and that is what powers your wall switch or remote to open the main burner. A weak thermopile usually shows up as a pilot that stays lit but a burner that will not come on.

So the rule of thumb: pilot won't stay lit is usually a thermocouple story. Pilot stays lit but burner won't fire is usually a thermopile story.

The 6 Real Causes, Most Common First

1. A worn or oxidized thermocouple

This is the number one cause, by a wide margin. The probe tip sits in an open flame every time the fireplace runs. Over years it oxidizes, the output drops, and eventually it can no longer hold the valve open. It is a cheap part with a limited service life - nothing has gone catastrophically wrong with your fireplace.

2. A dirty or misaligned pilot flame

The flame has to physically wrap around the sensor tip to heat it. Dust, lint, pet hair, and spider webs collect in the pilot hood over an off-season and push the flame off target. A healthy pilot flame is steady and blue with a small soft tip, and it should engulf the top third of the probe. A lazy yellow flame that flickers away from the probe will not do the job even with a brand new thermocouple.

3. A clogged pilot orifice

The opening that feeds the pilot is tiny. Sediment, rust flakes from inside the gas line, or insect debris will choke it down. Symptom: the pilot is noticeably smaller and weaker than it used to be, and it may take several tries to catch at all.

4. A loose or corroded connection at the gas valve

The thermocouple lead threads into the valve body. Vibration, a previous repair, or corrosion at the nut interrupts that already-tiny signal. A perfectly good thermocouple reads as dead if the connection is bad.

5. Drafts and venting problems

If your pilot dies only on windy days, or only after the blower kicks on, you are looking at a draft problem rather than a parts problem. A cracked or missing glass gasket, a failing chimney cap, or a blocked vent can all disturb the pilot. In Gulf Coast homes especially, we find bird nests and wasp nests in vent terminations after a summer of no use.

6. A failing gas control valve

Least common, most expensive. If the thermocouple tests strong and the connection is clean but the valve still will not hold, the valve itself is done. Worth knowing this is the rare case, not the default assumption.

What You Can Safely Check Yourself

Short list, and it stops well short of taking anything apart:

  • Confirm the gas is actually on. If your propane tank ran low or a shutoff got bumped during other work, everything else is a waste of time.
  • Follow your manufacturer's relighting instructions. They are usually printed on a label inside the lower access panel. After months of no use, the line may need a longer hold to purge air - many manufacturers call for holding the knob 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Look at the flame. Blue and steady, wrapping the probe, is good. Yellow, small, or dancing away from the probe is your answer.
  • Note the pattern. Windy days only? After the blower runs? Every single time? That detail saves diagnostic time.

What we would not do: sand or file a thermocouple tip (it is a short-lived fix that masks a part at the end of its life), adjust the gas valve, or bypass any safety component. Those cross from maintenance into gas work.

Why This Is Worth Fixing Before Fall

NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys, fireplaces and vents, calls for chimneys, fireplaces and vents to be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances - with cleaning and repairs done as needed. That applies to gas appliances and their venting too, not just wood burners. The Chimney Safety Institute of America publishes homeowner guidance built on the same standard.

The practical reason to handle it in August: the first cold snap is when every hearth company in Dallas-Fort Worth and along the Gulf Coast books out. A pilot problem in August is a scheduled appointment. The same problem in November is a two-week wait.
