That code exists because longer, twistier ducts measurably raise fire risk — not because inspectors enjoy math. The more turns, the more surface area lint has to grab onto, and the harder it is for a shop-vac or a homeowner-grade brush to reach the middle of the run.

Why This Shows Up More in Some Homes Than Others

We see two patterns often. In newer DFW construction, laundry rooms are frequently tucked into the center of the house for design reasons, which means the duct has to snake through walls and around framing to reach outside — more elbows, more distance, more places for lint to build.
