Squirrels in the Attic in Baldwin County: What It Costs and How They Got In

Squirrels are the most common attic animal we get called about in Baldwin County, and they are the one homeowners tend to underestimate. A raccoon announces itself. A squirrel just sounds like the house settling, right up until you find chewed wiring insulation or a wet spot in a bedroom ceiling.

How to know it is squirrels

Squirrels keep daylight hours. That single fact separates them from most of the alternatives.

• Morning and late afternoon activity. Loudest around sunrise and again a couple hours before dusk. Quiet overnight.
• Fast, light, scampering movement that travels horizontally across the ceiling rather than staying in one place.
• Rolling and dragging sounds. Squirrels cache things. Acorns rolling across ceiling joists is a distinctive sound once you have heard it.
• Gnawing. Their incisors never stop growing, so they chew constantly — on rafters, on wire, on whatever is there.

What it costs

Animal removal runs $180 to $560. That range is not vagueness — it reflects real differences in the work:

You get the number before we start. Exclusion — closing the entry point so it does not happen again — and any damage repair are quoted separately once we can see the actual opening, because a loose gable screen and a chewed-through fascia board are genuinely different work. We would rather look at it than guess at it over the phone.

Where they actually got in

Squirrels do not need much. A gap the width of a golf ball is enough, and they will enlarge what they find. On Baldwin County houses, these are the openings we find most:

• Gable and ridge vents with failed screening. The screen behind a gable vent is usually thin galvanized mesh, and coastal humidity plus salt air rots it out from behind where nobody can see it.
• Soffit and fascia gaps. Where the roof edge meets the wall, especially at corners and where a lower roofline ties into an upper one. Wind-driven rain works these open over years.
• Chimney chase covers and caps. A rusted chase cover seam gives access to the chase, and from the chase into the attic is often a short trip. This is the overlap with our chimney work and it is more common than people expect.
• Overhanging limbs. Squirrels do not climb your siding if they can walk in from a branch. Trimming back six to eight feet from the roofline removes the highway.
• Roof-to-wall flashing and plumbing boots. Deteriorated boots and lifted flashing create an edge, and an edge becomes an entrance.

Notice how many of those are corrosion problems rather than construction problems. Inland, a builder-grade vent screen might last twenty years. Within a few miles of the bay it does not, and that is the part homeowners here consistently get blindsided by — the same house, the same materials, a much shorter clock.

Why removal alone does not solve it

This is the part worth being blunt about. If someone removes the squirrels and leaves the opening, you have not fixed anything. Squirrels are territorial about good den sites, and an established attic entrance in a neighborhood does not stay vacant. The scent markers are still there. So is the hole.

Exclusion is the actual repair. Removal is what has to happen first so you are not sealing an animal inside — which is both inhumane and a guaranteed odor problem two weeks later.

That ordering matters, and it is why we handle both. We fabricate and install caps, animal screens and chase covers ourselves, so when the entry point turns out to be the chimney, the removal and the fix are the same company on the same job.

What squirrels do to an attic

Beyond the noise, three things are worth checking once they are out:

Wiring. Chewed insulation on romex is a real fire concern, and it is the reason we do not treat a squirrel call as a nuisance job. If wire damage is visible, that is an electrician's call, and we will tell you so rather than pretending otherwise.

Insulation. Nesting flattens batts and blown-in insulation, and contamination from droppings and urine means some of it comes out rather than getting fluffed back up.

Ductwork. Flex duct is soft and squirrels get into it. A torn duct in a hot Baldwin County attic is an air conditioning bill you will notice.
