I hear scratching in my chimney. What is it?
Light, fast scurrying during daylight is usually squirrels or birds. Heavy shifting and chirring around dusk points more often to a raccoon. A rapid chittering from a group of birds deep in the flue in spring and summer is likely chimney swifts — a migratory species protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which changes what anyone is permitted to do until they fledge. Identifying the animal comes first for a reason.
Do you seal the entry point, or just remove the animal?
Both, and we would rather do both. Removal on its own is temporary — the opening that let one animal in is still there, and on the coast it is usually a corroded cap, a failed chase cover or a broken vent hood. We fabricate and install caps, animal screens and chase covers ourselves, so the removal and the fix do not require two companies.
What about bats — can you do that any time of year?
No, and be careful with anyone who says otherwise. Alabama Extension guidance is that bat exclusion should be done outside the pupping season, roughly April through August, because one-way doors installed while the young are still flightless trap them inside the structure. If you call us in June about bats, we will inspect, tell you what we see and schedule the exclusion for the right window.
