Flexible Dryer Vent Hose: Which Kind Is Safe, and Which Kind Code Won't Allow
That silver hose behind your dryer has a name and a code section. Here's how to tell which kind you have, which ones are allowed, and when it matters.

You pulled the dryer out from the wall to fish out a sock, and now you're staring at the hose behind it. Silver, ribbed, squashed flat where the machine has been leaning on it for six years. Maybe yours is white plastic. Maybe there are two pieces joined with foil tape because the original one was four inches too short.
That hose has a name. The building code calls it a transition duct, and it is the most ignored part of a dryer system in most Mobile homes — partly because it hides behind an appliance nobody moves, and partly because the hardware store sells four different versions of it and only some of them are allowed.
Here's how to tell what you've got, what the rules actually say, and when it's worth doing something about.
First: transition duct vs. exhaust duct
These are two different parts with two different rule sets, and mixing them up is where most of the trouble starts.
The transition duct is the short flexible piece from the back of your dryer to the fitting in the wall or floor. The exhaust duct is everything past that point — the rigid pipe running through the wall, ceiling, or crawlspace out to the exterior hood.
Flexible hose is permitted for the first one. It is not permitted for the second one. If you can see silver flex duct disappearing into a wall cavity or running across an attic, that's not a transition duct anymore, and it needs to be corrected.
The four hoses you'll find behind a dryer
The 2021 International Residential Code, section M1502.4.3, is short and specific about transition ducts: a single length, listed and labeled to UL 2158A, not more than 8 feet long, and not concealed within construction. You can read the section yourself at ICC's code library.
Against that, here's what's actually sold:

The tell is printed right on the duct. If there's no UL 2158A marking anywhere on it, assume it isn't listed.
Why the thin foil hose causes problems
It isn't that foil hose bursts into flame on its own. It's that the shape of it works against you three different ways.
The deep ribs catch lint. Air tumbling past a corrugated wall drops fiber in every valley, and once a little collects, more collects on top of it. A smooth-wall pipe doesn't give lint anything to hold onto.
It crushes. Push a dryer back against a wall and a foil hose folds into a pancake behind it. You've just cut your duct opening down to a slot without knowing it.
And it tempts people to splice. Two pieces taped together is not a single length, and taped joints behind a warm, vibrating appliance come apart eventually.
None of that is theoretical. NFPA's research on home dryer fires found that failure to clean was the leading contributing factor, at about one-third of dryer fires — and those particular fires accounted for roughly half of the dryer fire deaths (NFPA Research). A hose designed to trap lint is a hose that needs cleaning more often than anyone does it.
The five mistakes that matter more than the hose itself
- Crushed flat behind the machine. The most common one we find, and the easiest to fix. Pull the dryer out two inches.
- Two pieces taped together. Code wants one continuous length. Buy the right length instead.
- Screws through the duct. Code says fasteners must not protrude more than 1/8 inch into the inside of the duct — a screw sticking through is a lint hook.
- Flex duct buried in a wall. Transition ducts can't be concealed. If a remodel hid yours, it needs to be rigid pipe now.
- Stretched way out to reach an awkward fitting. Eight feet is the ceiling, and honestly, shorter is better every time.
The Mobile part of this
Two things make this worse on the Gulf Coast than it is inland.
The first is simple physics. A dryer's job is to carry moisture out of the house, and it has to push that moist air into whatever's already outside. In Mobile's humidity, cycles already run longer than they would in a dry climate — so a duct that's half-blocked turns a long cycle into a very long one. If you're running a second cycle to finish a load of towels, the duct is the first thing to look at, not the machine.
The second is the exterior end. Salt-carrying coastal air corrodes the hood and its flap. Code requires a backdraft damper at the termination and specifically prohibits installing a screen there. When that damper rusts and sticks partly shut, exhaust backs up, lint settles at the wall end of the run, and the whole system chokes from the outside in. We see it constantly on homes within a few miles of the bay.
What you can do yourself, and where to stop
You can handle the easy version. Unplug an electric dryer, walk it away from the wall, look at what you've got, and swap a bad hose for a UL 2158A semi-rigid piece cut to the right length. While you're back there, vacuum the lint trap housing.
Stop and call somebody if any of this is true:
- It's a gas dryer — that's a gas connection, and it isn't a learning project
- The duct disappears into a wall, ceiling, or crawlspace and you can't see the far end
- There are scorch marks, melted plastic, or a burnt smell anywhere near the duct
- Your vent terminates on the roof
- You clean the hose, and the dryer still takes two cycles
That last one matters. A clean hose with a packed exhaust duct behind it still doesn't dry clothes. The hose is four feet. The run behind the wall might be thirty.
Questions we get asked
Is flexible foil dryer duct against code?
Thin foil "slinky" duct is almost never listed and labeled to UL 2158A, which the IRC requires for transition ducts — so in practice, no, it doesn't comply. Heavier semi-rigid aluminum duct that carries the UL 2158A marking is a different product and is permitted.
Can I use two pieces of dryer hose to reach the wall?
No. Code calls for a single length. If one piece won't reach, the fix is a longer piece or a short run of rigid pipe with an elbow — not tape.
How long can the hose behind my dryer be?
Eight feet maximum for the transition duct. That's separate from the exhaust duct behind the wall, which has its own 35-foot limit that shrinks with every bend.
Does a dryer vent need a screen to keep birds out?
No — and code prohibits one. The backdraft damper is what's supposed to keep things out. If yours is stuck open or corroded through, replace the hood rather than adding a screen that will pack with lint.
If I replace the hose, do I still need the vent cleaned?
Usually yes. Lint that came off the hose over the years is already downstream in the duct. Replacing the hose fixes the part you can see; it doesn't empty the part you can't.
