Football Season Grill Prep: 6 Steps

Six things to check on a built-in grill or outdoor kitchen before the first game. Fifteen minutes. If any step makes you nervous, that's the one we do for you.

  1. Pull the grates and look under. The grease tray and heat plates are what catch fire when a flare-up gets away.
  2. Light every burner. Yellow, uneven or weak flame means clogged ports or heat plates rusted through.
  3. Empty the grease tray. If it's full to the lip, it has been feeding every flare-up since spring.
  4. Look inside the hood. Wasps and mud daubers build in there over the summer.
  5. Check the gas fittings. Soapy water on the connections. Bubbles mean a leak. Tighten or replace.
  6. If any step made you nervous, stop. That's the one we do for you, and we do all six on the same visit.
